Long-Term Birth Control Options

There are many long-term birth control options available.

The two most talked about birth control options are the pill and condoms, but you should know that they are, by no means, the only options that are available to you. Many women prefer not to use the pill because it requires them to take a pill every single day, and condoms can be inconvenient for some. If you are looking for a long-term form of birth control, you’ll be glad to know that you have many options. The following is a list from our Sarasota obstetrics clinic of a long-term birth control options:

#1. IUD

An IUD is a small device that is shaped like a T and placed inside the womb or the uterus. Depending on the type of IUD you get, you could get protection for anywhere from three to 10 years. Believe it or not, IUDs are actually more effective than the pill, birth control rings and birth control patches by up to 20 percent. Additionally, IUDs can be easily removed by your doctor should you decide that you are ready to get pregnant. There are two main types of IUDs, hormonal IUDs and copper IUDs. Hormonal IUDs use the hormone progestin to prevent sperm from entering the cervix. Copper IUDs are hormone-free, and copper works as a spermicide to prevent the egg from getting fertilized.

The IUD is just one form of long-term birth control that you need to be aware of. Would you like to learn more? If so, please stay tuned for our next blog.
